Happy saint’s day to St Brigid’s flower!

The Irish name for dandelion is caisearbhán, which includes 'searbh' (bitter) and 'cais' or 'cois' (feet). It may have earned this name due to its bitter-tasting roots.

But it's also known here as Bearnán Bríde, 'the indented one of Brigid'. It’s one of the first blooms of Spring, popping out soon after St Brigid's Day on 1 February.

Check out the brilliant map on Gormu.com that shows the dandelion's name in other European languages! Thanks to Conor Ó Buachalla.
